The Boreal Shield is the largest ecozone in Canada and depicts the characteristics that most would imagine when thinking of this beautiful country; vast exposed granite bedrock with immense forest cover and many bodies of water. This region of the Boreal Shield sees some mixing of coniferous and deciduous vegetation with the majority being pine, balsam and White Spruce.
The French River area of the Boreal Shield has one of the highest bear densities in the entire province of Ontario. This is primarily due to the area being full of large inaccessible tracts of wilderness comprised of plentiful natural food crops. Also, French River is located far enough north to be away from large urban centers yet far enough south that the months out of den is maximized.
